People In Music History
Gluck, Christoph Willibald [von] (1714-1787) German composer, born in Bavaria
but possibly of Bohemian origin; traveled much -- London, 1745; Paris, 1773
-1779, where his followers opposed those of Piccinni, settled and died in
Vienna. Was consciously an operatic reformer, stressing importance of
subordinating music to dramatic needs and also dispensing with dry Recitative;
his Alkestis (1767) has a famous preface expounding his ideas. This opera, like
its predecessor Orpheus was originally in Italian; both were later revised,
with French texts. Other operas include Iphigenia in Aulis, Iphigenia in
Tauris, and Armida, all in French. Wrote in all more than 45 stage works; also
instrumental pieces, etc.
